Long time Amen Brother collaborator, LDD has had his hands very full of late. In between being a new father and promoting his brilliant Fuzz Tones night, Dan has managed to drop an amazing selection of raw, beat-heavy weapons; often sounding more like a full band than a sample-based project, the spaced-out psych hum of this release is teaming with Dan’s flare for percussion and rhythm.
The EP’s opener, “Gotta Keep On“, is a groover straight from, to and for the dancefloor, this is anecdotal of the sets Dan has played at Amen Brother in the past. As are “Flying Colours” and “Grit“; their unrelenting percussion sitting perfectly amongst their edgy vintage fuzz feel. Once the bar has been set, the genres referenced and re-sampled, Dan offers the uplifting blissfulness of “Looking Up” before painting a more laid-back, meandering landscape in “3 Miles From Home” and “Brain Lotion“. That brings you to the EP’s closer, the excellent “Peace Not Destruction” which sounds more like live band on stage than one Dan with a plan and a mind full of samples. We highly recommended!
“I’m no music journalist but if I had to sum up The Other Side Of The Sky… imagine if Funk, Psych and 70s Movie Chase Scenes had a B-Boy Baby, then raised it on a diet of Drum Solos, Bong Hits and Distilled Ceiling Sweat.” – Some Guy
