Giles Armstrong is the same to the Dublin house and techno scene, as this cliched turn-of-phrase is to music journalism, i.e. f**kin’ everywhere!! Bossin’ it for more than ten years, Giles has played with a who’s who list of technocrats. Not surprising, seeing as he was one of the guys behind what is widely regarded as the best techno night Dublin has seen, Electric City. The residents of which, have gone on to start a number of great nights themselves. Dublin hasn’t seen an influence like that since that first brave soul decided she’s throw caution to the wind and keep her PJs on when headin’ to the shop.
I only met Giles properly for the first time about a year ago despite having caught more than a couple of his sets over my time in Dublin. For someone who I’d known of for so long as a DJ, I was surprised to meet a guy who is still very passionate about what he does and not only that, one who was enthusiastic about sharing any knowledge or experience he had from his time promoting and djing around the Fair City. A rare trait.
He’s a bit of a joker too it seems with his nod to wee Barry in the mix title. (Another respected attribute around these parts, piss taking!) In fact, the only serious thing I’ve found with Giles are the beats he plays. He himself described this mix better than I ever could, Deep Is For Dopes!!
