We’ve been enjoying Conor Meehan‘s DJ mixes online for a number of years now. A name that may well be new to you, Conor produces under the name Saalim, (recently remixing Crazy P and Danny Howells) playing regularly in his native Derry, as well as Liverpool – where he is currently based. He plays that brand of low-slung house and disco that’s perfect as a warm-up, and adeptly delivers a mix reflecting this.

Saalim – Smell Of Shitler

So simple when you listen to it but well ahead of the game at the same time..

Black Powder – Mosaferat

Heard this on Tenaglia’s BackToBasics mix and searched the vinyl down, proper druggy twisted up drums.

Moonface – Synchronized Knowledge

Like most of this list another record that has so much about it that I want to play it in every set, it’s perfect in every way for me, trance music done well.

This mix came straight out of nowhere, well, the Philippines to be precise. Conor Treanor, an old school-mate from Monaghan, sent me this electro mix yesterday. The mix name is a reference to the Death Squads in, you guessed it, Davao!

Conor’s job took him to pastures new, unfortunately those pastures involved no nightlife apart from ‘Rhianna & Katy Perry songs being murdered by a tone deaf Philipino prostitutes’. This, as you’d imagine, leaves him lots of free time for mixing! Normally a techno-only dj, Conor told me he has found recent releases a bit uninspiring so he went down a different route for this set.

The mix itself is much like the Davao Death Squads, not even civilians are safe!! Few electro classics and some local talent in there too. Bengin’!

Time for the next part of the Scene & Heard series where we look at the promotions around the Island. Seeing as MN’s latest addition, Tom Breslin, is from the area-ish, he’s taken the bull by the horns for us. Enjoy!!

Twitch have been running tings on the Techno/House side of things in Belfast for more than 5 years now, and have shown little sign of letting up judging by some of their latest gigs and bookings. I’ve been attending Twitch gigs in their various dwellings around town – starting in Lavery’s, moving onto the Stiff Kitten and now residing mainly in the Queens Student Union. In 2011 alone, they hosted some of the best gigs I’ve been to in Belfast, most notably the epic one-armed Function set in the church setting of the Empire, as well as Dublin’s own Lerosa along with providing Belfast debuts for Levon Vincent and Joy Orbison. I find the Twitch night is really important in Belfast’s small electronic music scene, booking artists at the forefront of house and techno.

Back in December, we called into the Christmas party with Belfast boys done good Bicep and a DJ set from Space Dimension Controller. We got in early doors of the underground Bunatee Bar of the Union, and the lads (Phil, Matt, Chris and Paddy) were warming proceedings nicely with some deep house selections – pick of the bunch being a Paddy Towe favourite from Delano Smith. Things were then left in the hands of SDC, a late addition to the lineup, following on nicely from the Twitch residents house vibes, giving us a rare glimpse of his turntable skills. The Twitch lads themselves have a good grasp on how a night should progress, and how to warm-up the people dancing – something that is paramount in any good night, whether people realise and notice it, or not.

For those in unawares, the Bicep crew run Feel My Bicep – probably one of the finest blogs for tunes about. What started out as a blog, purveying a wide range of styles from disco, boogie and italo to house and techno, has matured into a popular and prominent production/DJ duo. We’ve heard releases on Throne of Blood, Domino and most recently a remix for MN favourites –Blondes’ recent album release. Their set consisted of some muscular, pumpin’ 90s house gear, a number of their own jams and a particular highlight being Carl Craig at his most Utopian. And finishing up with this.

Our latest guest mix comes from Derry’s Darren Allen who runs the Underlying Form Podcast. Darren’s being djing around Ireland for as long as we can recall. We first heard of him through our time going to Shine etc. (The less said about the GU board the better!!) It took us a while to pin him down for this one but it paid off.

He knows his shit, so instead of us pretending we do, here’s what Darren had to say about his project and mix. Enjoy!

“The Underlying Form Podcast / DJ Mix series is dedicated to high quality techno, house and contemporary electronic music. Identifying the underlying essence that lurks beneath the surface appearance.”

In short… this means no hype, no bullshit, just quality underground music.

Basically I was inspired to start the Podcast series to showcase some of my favourite DJs who share the same musical ethos as myself. It also acts as an outlet for my own mixes and other creative projects. So far each mix has been received very well and stands alone in originality and certain ‘niche’ style ranging through contemporary techno, classic house, deep, tech, dub and ambient sounds. Each of the DJs have been personally selected by me yet no restrictions have been made regarding genre, allowing each artist to express themselves in whatever way they see fit. I don’t want to talk too much about the Podcast, as it’s what I’ve said from the beginning, that the music will ultimately speak for itself.

To accompany the mix series there is also a group on Facebook which runs parallel and acts as a space for fellow lovers of underground electronic music to come together, be inspired, promote and share sounds. Currently there is well over 300 world wide members and counting from Detroit to Berlin and beyond. The integrity and quality of the music that is shared on a daily basis is a reflection of the kind of people that Underlying Form aims to attract. Originally the idea was to host an external blog, yet with the ease, popularity and the efficient matching up with YouTube, Soundcloud etc with the Facebook format it made much more sense to keep it within the parameters of FB.

Darren Allen – Labour Of Love by MN Collective

As for the mix which mntothat.com kindly asked me to contribute; it was recorded on 17th Feb 2012 on 2 x Technics 1210′s and an Allen & Heath mixer using vinyl records only with no prior rehearsal or post mix effects. My intention was to deliver a set that captures my various styles. It is meant to be suitable for home listening as well as have enough energy to move a dance floor. In my DJ sets I’m always conscious of marrying these two styles in a coherent way. I try to present abstract music in a way that can be enjoyed by almost everyone. I recently realised that I’ve been DJing in clubs for 10 years now. Hopefully it’s starting to show.

Upcoming gigs:

10th March – Stiff Kitten, Belfast
24th March – micro error w/ One: John Heckle, The Hudson, Belfast

(There Are More Gigs Lined Up But Some Details TBC At This Time)

To celebrate Amen Brother‘s move to a new monthly slot at 12 Sundays, we ‘ve planned a full day of free February funk for the Shaw.

To kick off the party, there will be screening Wattstax, a documentary film by Mel Stuart that focused on the 1972 Wattstax music festival and the African American community of Watts in Los Angeles, California. Organised to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the Watts riots, Wattstax was seen by some as “the Afro-American answer to Woodstock”. Lots of live performance, footage and interviews so should be a fun show. You may even get some free grub if you’re good!!

All pints will be e3 for 12 Sundays members too so if you aren’t a member, follow the link below.

After the screening, Pete Cadden and Sean Gilheaney will play their favourites in funk, blues, northern soul and breaks until kicking out time.

African boogie music is a largely unknown and underrated territory for most DJ’s out there today. This can mostly be attributed to the scarcity of Western African disco in general, which can drive prices into the thousands for holy grails of the genre and finding them in mint playable condition can be an equal struggle. We basically know maybe one or two other DJ’s who spin this kind of stuff, Frank Grosner of Voodoo Funk and Uche Ikonne from Comb and Razor, both of whom also released the first official compilations focusing on Nigerian disco and boogie funk last year, Lagos Disco Inferno and Brand New Wayo, we recommend checking them out!

Gmos, who has contributed the latest Amen Brother podcast, definitely doesn’t suffer from poor pressings and I’m sure this could be one of the most expensive mixes put together for the Amen Brother series so far! Musically he mixes and blends together highlights of 1980s Nigerian based African disco and boogie funk, with some of the later tracks even showing the influence of electro and rap! Featuring popular artists of the time like Dizzy K, Christy Essien, Chris Mba and Oby Onyioha, alongside some more obscure treasures and productions by the big studio producers like Lemmy Jackson, Jake Sollo and Nkono Teles.
