Amen Brother Vol.10 – Larry Grogan

When Niall and I started the Amen Brother podcast, we didn’t think when we would be posting many sets apart from our own but so far we’ve had amazing contributions.  Being from a house and techno background, we’ve aimed to put something different out there. We wanted something that will educate as much as entertain. (All this cliché is making me feel nauseous!)
While Amen Bro encompasses lots of genres (Jazz, Psych Rock, Disco, 80′s Electro), you can imagine how pleased we are to be posting Volume 10 from none other than the man who influenced so many of our funk endeavors over the years, Larry Grogan.

Larry, for the uninitiated, is the man behind the world famous Funky16Corners blog & radio show in New York.  A vinyl connoisseur, radio host and funk and soul encyclopaedia, Larry has probably influenced our Amen Brother sets more than any other DJ out there in the last 5 years, in fact, if memory serves correctly it was Funky16Corners where we first discovered that catchy Winstons track, whatever it was called!!

But he’s been influencing people far longer than that….

A vinyl collecter from the age of 12, Larry’s been DJing since the 80s and it was around 1985 that he first started started putting together print magazines on an almost continuous basis until he made the jump online with the Funky16Corners web zine in 2000. The concept of the web zine  was to continue what he had been doing in print but with the advantage of color pics, sounds samples and global reach (which weren’t affected postal service shootouts).

The current incarnation of Funky16Corners Webzine is celebrating it’s 7th birthday this week (7 goin’ on 27 !!) and we are honoured to be hosting this podcast part of the celebrations. The prime example of someone who just loves the music he plays, Larry has probably influenced every soul/funk/rare groove dj on the face of the planet in some way or another. In a scene, where hoarding rare 45s is a very serious business, Larry has opened this music up to a whole new generation.

The mix is exactly what you’d expect, a mixture of classics and lesser known gems, all part of a constant stream of attention grabbing yesteryear greatness! If you don’t like this music, see a doctor!!

On behalf of Amen Bro, we hope you enjoy Vol. 10, and once again Happy Birthday Funky16Corners!!!
