WILLOWBROOK, Ill. (TND) — One person is dead and at least 22 others are injured after a shooting early Sunday in a suburban Chicago parking lot, according to local news reports.
WGN reports the DuPage County Sheriff's Office responded to the incident in unincorporated Willowbrook around 12:30 a.m. According to WLS, a big group was gathered in a strip mall parking lot for a Juneteenth celebration.
Fire officials said two victims are in critical condition and that officers applied tourniquets to wounded victims at the scene.
Witnesses described the scene as "chaotic" and said people began running for cover as gunfire ran out.
It was supposed to be like a Juneteenth celebration. We just started hearing shooting, so we dropped down until they stopped,” Markeshia Avery told WLS-TV.
A motive has not been established.
“Gathering for a holiday gathering should be a joyful occasion, not a time where gunfire erupts and families are forced to run for safety,” Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said in a statement Sunday.
The White House also released a statement, saying that the “President and First Lady are thinking of those killed and injured in the shooting in Illinois last night. We have reached out to offer assistance to state and local leaders in the wake of this tragedy at a community Juneteenth celebration.”
